Alternate modems

Some good modems if you are trying to get away from the Puma. These are a few that I can think of off hand.

Motorola's MB7420 (16x4) is good. An acquaintance of mine has the MB7220(8x4) and works well for him. I've asked him to stop by and post here.

Historial experiences:
SB 6120(4x4), 6121(4x4), and 6180(8x4) work well. So does my 6183(16x4).

Hello mates,

Just wondering how are you determining good modems vs bad modems here.
Gaming experience?
Bandwidth?
DSLR puma test.
Buffer bloat?
Ping plotter graphs?
Etc?

I have the MB7220 8x4 modem and has been performing well but want to know if i should be running an additional test before giving my full review on it.

Thanks!

Fair question.. My take is as long as it passes all the tests shown on badmodems.com (here) that its good for this page. Basically anything that's not a Puma 5-7.. Others would need to chime in as Im but a speck on a large piece of paper..

Bufferbloat is another matter. It really hasn't been talked about here. But I can tell you my SB6141 (Motorola branded Arris) tests the worst and my Zoom 5341J tests the best with my Zoom 5370 and Motorola MB8600 testing somewhere in between. Haven't really seen bufferbloat affect me much due to the fact that we rarely saturate our available bandwidth which is when you would run into bufferbloat.

With my Motorola the downstream bufferbloat is higher but upstream barely moves the graph. So Im not to worried.

Well hmmmm... I was figuring that others could review and test provide real world reports for a good modem. Maybe have a thread per device.

I will post some reviews of devices I have used and tested this weekend.
