Alternate modems
Some good modems if you are trying to get away from the Puma. These are a few that I can think of off hand.

Re: Alternate modems
Motorola's MB7420 (16x4) is good. An acquaintance of mine has the MB7220(8x4) and works well for him. I've asked him to stop by and post here.
Historial experiences:
SB 6120(4x4), 6121(4x4), and 6180(8x4) work well. So does my 6183(16x4).

Hello mates,
Just wondering how are you determining good modems vs bad modems here.
Gaming experience?
Bandwidth?
DSLR puma test.
Buffer bloat?
Ping plotter graphs?
Etc?
I have the MB7220 8x4 modem and has been performing well but want to know if i should be running an additional test before giving my full review on it.
Thanks!

Re: Alternate modems
Fair question.. My take is as long as it passes all the tests shown on badmodems.com (here) that its good for this page. Basically anything that's not a Puma 5-7.. Others would need to chime in as Im but a speck on a large piece of paper..
Bufferbloat is another matter. It really hasn't been talked about here. But I can tell you my SB6141 (Motorola branded Arris) tests the worst and my Zoom 5341J tests the best with my Zoom 5370 and Motorola MB8600 testing somewhere in between. Haven't really seen bufferbloat affect me much due to the fact that we rarely saturate our available bandwidth which is when you would run into bufferbloat.
With my Motorola the downstream bufferbloat is higher but upstream barely moves the graph. So Im not to worried.

Re: Alternate modems
Well hmmmm... I was figuring that others could review and test provide real world reports for a good modem. Maybe have a thread per device.
I will post some reviews of devices I have used and tested this weekend.

Re: Alternate modems
We just went D 3.1 here in the Bremerton WA area of Wave Broadband. I believe a factory reset of the modem was necessary as I had problems grabbing an address right away. But other than that things are golden here tonight.
Love seeing the light be blue finally! Channel is 349-443 mhz. Now I know why the damn cable box has been rebooting at night all week..

Re: Alternate modems
I was sent a NetGear CBK40 earlier this year. Supposedly NG crammed a CM700 (32x8) in the case. Puma 6 based. I had asked about this with NG and they said this had been addressed and should not be a problem. I tested it and it's got all green in the Puma 6 test. At the time, my ISP didn't support the CBK40 so I faked it and had them enable it under the CM700. Been working great here on Cableones 200/10 service I have. I'm slated to get something new from NG this month. A modem only this time. We'll shall see.

Here's a list of all DOCSIS 3.0 cable modems with at least 24 downstream channels using a Broadcom chipset currently in WikiDevi's database. This includes combo modem/router devices though.
